The
Los Angeles International Charter High School (LAICHS) was created to
provide parents with an alternative to the traditional public schools
within the Los Angeles Unified School District. LAICHS gives inner-city
youth a college preparatory education, a safer, smaller, more supportive
learning environment, one-on-one attention, and exciting and unique
opportunities to learn, experience, and reach their potential –
including internships with local businesses and non-profits and an opportunity
to study abroad. As a public school, LAICHS also helps to alleviate
the problem of overcrowding that plagues public high schools in Northeast
Los Angeles. Despite rapid population growth, a new high school has
not been built in this area in over 80 years.
Mission
LAICHS seeks to graduate active, enthusiastic, self-regulated learners
and leaders who are prepared to succeed in the nation’s top universities.
All students, regardless of their academic background, participate in
a college preparatory program designed to accelerate growth. Experienced,
credentialed teachers use a rigorous curriculum and a wide variety of
tested instructional techniques to reach and challenge each student.
Powerful Learning Experiences & Real World Applications
LAICHS connects students to the real world – giving them opportunities
to apply what they are learning in their classes, to be challenged,
and to prepare for their future. The internship and community service
programs give students real-world experience working with local businesses
and non-profits. Each class will engage students in learning through
powerful learning experiences – hands-on projects that allow students
to apply what they are learning in the classroom. For example, in Science,
students will study wildlife at the Audubon Center at Debs Park; and
in Social Studies, students will help facilitate Model United Nations
events. In addition, we encourage our students to attend a community
college during their high school years.
Foreign Exchange Program
Students who wish to participate in the study abroad program will stay
with a family and attend an accredited high school overseas. This is
an inspiring opportunity for students to experience another culture
and expand their language skills.
