Mr. White is originally from Boston.
He was accepted to and attended Boston Latin School,
the requisite admission test was waived for Orrin. With
family roots in Downeast Maine, it is no surprise to
find that he spent every Summer there. His family called
Orrin “Whizzer” but his friends called him “Wizard”.
He was popular with the “natives” and learned
many things from them. Those people have a history of
self-sufficiency. Among other things, they taught him
how to Dig Clams and Fish for Lobster. In college Orrin
first trained in Electrical Engineering – he can
wire just about anything you need to have wired. You
see – Northeastern wasn’t just a book learning
school – they sent out their students to work in
the real world. The Northeastern Co-op Graduate has practical
experience as well as the Theoretical knowledge. You
can apply the adage “they hit the ground running” to
these Graduates.
After graduating high school, Mr. White was accepted
to the General Electric Apprentice Program where he ran
an Engine Lathe and attended Tufts University in the
evenings on an associate degree in Mechanical Engineering
Program. It was from this program that Orrin transferred
to an Electrical Engineering Program at Northeastern
University.
The Vietnam War and the draft were in full swing in those
days so Orrin, having his bachelor’s degree in
Mathematics, was drafted and sent to Aberdeen Proving
Ground where he joined the Scientist and Engineer Battalion
to do Quality Control on Armor for his two years.
After his service Orrin went to work for the Massachusetts
Automobile Rating Bureau (a watchdog facility supported
by the Insurance Companies). Six years as an Operations
Supervisor and Cobol Programmer prompted Orrin’s
first retirement. He lived in the woods of New Hampshire
with his dog, Cecil.
After living in the woods for several years, Orrin attended
Graduate School where he earned his Master’s Degree
in Teaching Methods for the Secondary School. After Graduation,
Orrin was certified to teach Mathematics, Physics and
Chemistry in the state of Massachusetts.
Orrin’s first teaching contract was as a Mathematics
and Physics teacher at the prestigious Boston Latin School.
He has been teaching Math and Science now for 30 years – with – occasional
furloughs as an Excel programmer. His book Spreadsheet
Sorcery is as yet unpublished.
